It’s easy for people to assume that The Lovers card indicates a new love affair is starting soon.  Luckily for them, that interpretation is part of the meaning of this 6^th card of the Major Arcana.  In numerology the number six is all about adjusting to create balance.  It is in connection with higher energies and lower energies and works to bring those energies into a balance.  Sometimes, this requires making a choice to change your thoughts, attitudes, behaviors or social conditions. 

The Meaning of the Card

Since the numerology of the card is all about choice, it’s wise that this is associated with love.  Tarot readers will let you know that soon you may be called to make a choice in love.  Sometimes this choice is between your relationship and your family, but it almost always indicates a sacrifice to overcome obstacles. 

In simple readings this card indicates a new and unique experience, such as a relationship or a decision that must be made. 

Some also interpret The Lovers card to mean temptation of the physical senses.  Is this temptation good or bad?  It really depends on the rest of the cards in your reading.

Another interpretation for more spiritual wishes tells that your consciousness, your self, can’t understand higher spirituality without first connecting with the mysteries of his subconscious. 

Description of the Tarot Card

Tarot readers look for specific symbology in each of the cards they read to help them interpret that card’s meaning.  In this case The Lovers are represented by a man and a woman.  Sometimes they are naked; sometimes they will be holding each other.  They symbolize all of the above, love, temptation, choice.  The man can also represent the conscious or active mind, while the woman represents the subconscious mind.  Remember that spiritual interpretation?  In some cards you’ll also see the angel Raphael looking down and blessing the couple.  He represents higher spirituality.

Also on The Lovers, usually behind the woman will be The Tree of Knowledge, which bears five fruits of the senses.  They are temptation and the tree is encircled by a serpent, who is surprisingly, the guardian of sensation. 

Behind the man will be a tree representing the twelve signs of the Zodiac, man’s interpretation of the spiritual realm in our material world.
