There are a lot of different tarot card decks out there, yet all tarot card meanings are essentially the same. How can this be? It's quite simple. All tarot decks may use different images for the same cards, but they also use the same symbols or similar symbols for each card.

All Decks Use Similar Symbols

For example; the tarot card meaning of a Temperance card is the same as the meaning of a Temperance card in The Aquarian Tarot. They just use different themes and images. If you look closely though you'll find that each deck hides the symbols in both Temperance cards to indicate the same meaning.

In the Celtic Dragon deck, the Temperance card features three dragons interconnected to form a ring on a blue background. They are balanced with each other, in harmony. The fact, there are three dragons. Three indicates a balance, but also encourages patience because of a slight delay.

It's a little harder to see that same symbol in the Temperance card for the Aquarian Tarot. You can notice that there are a series of consecutive blue triangles just below her throat. Blue is a color associated with truth, another facet of the Temperance card and also the background color for the Temperance card in the Celtic Dragon tarot. Triangles also have three sides and they themselves are associated with healing, focusing powers.

The Suits All tarot decks have four suits which add a lot to the tarot card meanings and are the same if not similar across the board.

You can easily look to the suit image of a tarot card for some additional meaning.

Cups or Bowls: emotions, desires and feelings; creativity; water

Wands, Staves or Rods: ideas, ambition, and sometimes education or learning; air

Swords: action, indicate a struggle or challenge; fire

Pentacles or Coins: manifestation, they are the results or stability; can indicate material goods, money; earth

Face Cards: Anytime a royal card pops up with a person on it you can assume that this card represents a person associated with your question or situation. By tradition, Pages are young people, Queens are women, and Kings are men. Knights can indicate a young man or woman.

For more information about this person look to their suit. A Knight of Cups is an emotional man. He could be very creative or artistic. His astrological sign may even be associated with water, like Pisces, Cancer or Scorpio.

Look to the images of your tarot deck for the full tarot card meanings. You'll be surprised at how much of a card's meaning you can piece together by interpreting the symbols and scenes presented on them.
