How to Read Tarot: The Hermit

The Hermit is the 9th card in the Major Arcana.  In numerology the number nine is all about completion.  When you have reached this level you are nearing the stage of completion in your current affairs.  It signifies idealism of the highest form and that another plateau awaits you.

The Meaning of the Card

When learning how to read tarot, you’ll find that The Hermit means a period of solitude.  Whereas previous cards in the Major Arcana indicated introspection and solitude in thinking, this card can mean a literal withdrawal from other people.  Usually this is to focus on your own personal efforts, explore your spiritual side or even recover from the hectic nature of life.

The Hermit is wise and has knowledge that is important for you.  This card can also indicate that an older man, somewhat like The Hermit could come into your life or is already in your life and can offer you sage advice.  The advice you receive from this man concerning your query is the truth and you can safely implement it without worry.

When applied to love, The Hermit can indicate that you are feeling lonely and may not have the one you love.  This period of loneliness is unavoidable and you should do your best to make it bearable.  Go out with your friends; engage in interesting hobbies and activities until the time is right to fall in love.

How to Read Tarot Descriptions for The Hermit

Most tarot decks will use the same symbology for The Hermit card in their Major Arcana decks.

The Hermit is often shown as an older man standing by himself.  He may be on top of a mountain, symbolizing the high plateau that he has reached.  He’ll be carrying a lantern which represents the light of his truth and knowledge.  The Hermit uses his lantern to light the path for weary travelers, so that others can benefit from all that he knows.

You can also see that The Hermit is cloaked and carries a staff or rod with him.  The rod represents ideas, thought and growth.  He has withdrawn from the world so that he may continue to interpret and develop his wisdom.

Special Advice: It’s been a journey but you are nearing completion of your project or wish.  Follow the guidance of the wise man who offers it.  Keep in mind that more plateaus await you.
